Randy Fett, Lead Pastor St. John's Lutheran Church 301 48th Ave. NW, Kasson Good News! As a church we have been focusing on the Good News this past month. It is the Epiphany season for Christians. This is the time to celebrate Jesus' calling disciples. It is a time to celebrate, as the gospel writer John says, "The true light which enlightens the world". I have encouraged everyone to think about how they share the good news in our world. It involves our Listening, the gift of Spiritual Discernment, Speaking, Acting, Reconciliation, Freedom, and Transformation. Now we know that we long to hear "good news", "good" news and not "bad" news. I am sure we can all recount the moments in time when the ball dropped and we received some disheartening news. But I would encourage you to reflect on those moments when your heart skipped a beat or two when you received good news. I am not talking about winning the lottery. It used to be the Publishers Clearing House ticket. Did you ever fill one of those forms out? I often wondered if it was really true, if some lucky soul actually won the cool mil- lion that year. Bring this thought down a notch. Think about the times that you got an "A" on your report card at school. Think about when you got hired for your job. Think about the time when you got engaged or said "I do" at your wedding. Think about the news that you were going to have child or a grandchild. Our kids recently pulled a good news one on us. We were eating at one of the local restaurants with our son and daugh- ter in law. Our daughter in law stole away for a moment in the restaurant. I thought she was just admiring the place and look- ing around. We ordered up the meal. When my wife and I were about done with our dinner the waitress commented to us, "Those sure are some interesting looking plates." Her words just blew right past us. It wasn't until we were done eating that we read the words "Grandpa" and "Grandma" on the dinner plates. This was our son and daughter in law's way of announcing the birth of their first child, and our first grand- child to us. That's how the "Good News" that we have in Jesus Christ works. It is about Transformation. It requires our Listening, Discernment, Speaking, Actions, Reconciliation, and Freedom to recognize the news on the plate. And when the plate is cleared, when we have had our fill, (Martin Luther talks about this in his discussion on the "Daily Bread" phrase in the Lord's Prayer), then it's time for us to get out of the doors of our restaurants and begin sharing the good news. As I tell our people, it will require that we step out of our comfort zones. Spend some time contemplating God's Good News this week. In the gospel of Mark it is called the "Evangel", the "Gospel" of our Lord Jesus Christ. Share this with your neighbor. Invite them to worship. Sing the songs of faith. Maybe even go Epiphany caroling. Serve someone in Christ's name. Better yet, talk to a waitress and get her in on the act. It's Good News! - Pastor Randy N N f
